Class of 2024 will be graduating very soon, but senioritis is starting to hit Seniors. What are ways to keep going even if there is a feeling of wanting to give up and stop showing up? The support of others can be helpful. However, it is very important to finish strong and something that will seem harder with it getting closer to graduation.
One reason behind the cause of Senioritis can be to age. In an interview with Kearns High School Psychologist Jared Benware, he states “The cause of Senioritis is because when we get to seventeen and eighteen, we get in a difficult stage of being an adult but also a teen. Including the eagerness to move on due to the same things happening for example, being around the same people that you’ve been around for all high school, but also the events they just seem like you’ve done, and they are just the same thing.” The eagerness to move on to try new things is the biggest one that can be from getting a job, going to college, moving around, etc. The feeling of being able to plan a new era or chapter in these students’ lives, it’s what makes so many wishes for high school to be over. However, students need to be able to manage through and be able to get support from the people around them but specifically parents. When Benware was asked how parents could help, he stated, “Remaining interested in their students’ academic life and making sure to check in. You can see the difference with even parent teacher conference there are many more involved parents during elementary, and then it lowers through middle school to even lower involvement through high school.” Some other people that can help get that boost of motivation is through school counselors. They can help you set a goal so that students are interested and motivated.
However, many times it’s on the student to be able to grow and be able to see the ways to help with senioritis, Beware stated, “You should take classes that challenge yourself, including being able to have a job and make time for that as well.” That also can go along with finishing strong through their class which means according to Beware, “Is very important to have short term and long-term goals and working through it and seeing ways to improve. Including also having a reward system where parents could also help where you get a good grade in a class you are able to get a treat like being able to go do something you want to do.”
The time is now for students to get things done and be able to experience things that are very different from anyone in high school due to the extra time on their hands, these little things that senior can do to be able to get motivation and create for more goals to come through this and be able to create more of a focus on those career choices. However, motivation is important and speaking to adults around those seniors will help them understand ways to continue if they like they just can’t get anything done.
