In Kearns High School we have a great number of students who come from different backgrounds. And we have so much diversity here and it can be hard to take it all in at once. So to try and get a better understanding of it Andrea Garcia, a first generation Hispanic and a student here at Kearns High, was interviewed to help us understand culture here at Kearns High.
And how does Andrea stay connected with culture? Well, this is what Andrea was asked on September 7, 2023, Andrea expresses how her mother is her biggest inspiration. As her mom migrated to the United States just at 15 years old and has been here since. And Andrea states “If it weren’t for my mom taking a risk 20 years ago i wouldn’t be where i am today with all these opportunities just in arms reach.”
Andrea was also asked “What does culture mean to you?” in which she responded, “What culture means to me is to pass down traditions that have been going on for a long time and shows where you come from.” And although culture is beautiful it has its pros and cons. For instance, she explains how you can feel like an outsider. And she stated that “Yes of course there are going to be times in life where you feel like you don’t belong or are different from the rest.” As we know being different can be challenging but she also states that “But i never really feel like that at school because there are so many people who are just like me here” Which just goes to show how diverse Kearns High school really is and how connected with culture we are.
