Key Club is an “International, student-led organization that provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership.” (Key Club International). These are established in high schools with officers which can include, “one president, one or more vice presidents, a secretary treasure, an editor, and one director from each class.” This service club is a unique organization with many different services. It’s not a very big club at Kearns High School, but that doesn’t stop the members from doing great services. Some of the amazing things the Kearns High Key Club does for our community are working on making our home and school a better place, and making everyone around them feel more welcome where they are. Currently, about 10 students are enrolled in this club and it is run by Chad Martin, a Spanish teacher at Kearns High School.
Key Club meets after school and students can participate in, and give service to, the community, schools, and our faculty. Their goals are to do things to improve the lives and environments of everyone in the community. They strive to make an impact on the school and everyone in it. President of the club, Araceli Padilla said, “Even though it is a small group, we get really close and are able to have a fun time and make an impact.” The club members are always finding and working on projects to help people in need and spreading cheerfulness. “We just do service things for our school and faculty and our community. We do different projects each month or week,” Araceli Padilla commented.
Key Club does many activities to help the community during the holidays. For example, this past Thanksgiving they did a community service called “Turkey in a Box.” This is a basket that is full of Thanksgiving dinner that is given away to families in need of a meal. They create projects that help out our faculty such as the lunch ladies and have even given blankets to the preschool we have at Kearns High School.
Javier Martinez, the Vice President of the Key Club commented, “Right now we have been making cards for the elderly, at the Summit Senior Living Center, as Christmas gifts to make them feel more loved.” This activity included Key Club members creating popsicle stick decorations and cards for senior citizens.
Oftentimes the students participating in the Key Club leave positive notes around the school to create a safer and peaceful place for everyone to be in. These notes are hung around the school to spread positivity and motivation for the students in our community. They do this especially for the teachers as they do so much for our school. Key Club members are always looking for service opportunities to help out anybody who needs it and creates a positive environment for the students, teachers, and overall, the whole community.

In this club, students most enjoy how much they get to impact our school and everyone around them. Araceli Padilla, the president of Key Club stated, “They enjoy each other’s company. We are not just like ‘Oh we’re here to do service.’ We are social with each other.” Javier Martinez, also stated, “I get a social life here and get to feel comfortable here, not always worrying about everything.” Students participating in this club are increasing their social aspect and making lots of new friends which helps each to spread kindness around. This club benefits students in many amazing ways.
