There were all types of new releases in 2023. Whether that be a fresh new game, or the new scary movie on the block. The Cougar Claw has gathered up the votes of 100 different Kearns High students and teachers on their favorite new releases, community members, events, and more.
Starting with the most clear winner. In the favorite movie category Spider-man: Across The Spiderverse. A thrilling action movie following the protagonist Miles Morales through different universes on the run from alternate reality Spidermen being led on the attack by Spiderman 2099 otherwise known as Miguel O’Hara.
Keeping the theme with TV entertainment, up next is the number one show, Stranger Things. Winning with almost three times as many votes as other shows, Stranger Things is a show that follows a group of kids that stumble into the darkness within Hawkins. Superpowers, an alternate dimension, complex creatures, and an intriguing take on it all, what’s not to love? Season five being the newest addition to the series, follows a new danger, Vecna, with abilities never seen before his connection to the upside down allows him control in the real world.
Next up we have the favorite song. This was a close one winning by only one vote. The number one song is Stick Season by Noah Kahan. This upbeat alternative folk song is a song about the “Stick Season” in Vermont which is the time of year when all the leaves fall off the trees and the world kind of just feels gray. This song is left so up in the air on what it’s genuinely about and that allows for it to have its own meaning within everyone and it really is worth a listen!
Next up in the audio creation theme is music artists. There are many singers and songwriters, all who have their own wonderful and unique taste on music. This year’s winner has taken it to a whole new level with beats that feel out of this world, the voice to match them, creative lyrics, and more. The Weeknd proves that he is a great artist, and has music for almost everyone. He not only helped in the soundtrack for Avatar The Way of Water, but also released seven different songs this year including “False Alarm” which came with a thrilling music video to pair. As well as “Another One of Me” featuring 21 Savage, another popular artist.
Next up is the favorite video game of Kearns High. With its intense battle royale gameplay, and having introduced three new modes as of recent which include Lego survival, Rocket Racing, and Festival mode. That’s right, Fortnite with its unique building mechanics, also did a throwback season called the OG season (OG – original) bringing back the old map, weapons, features and more.
Now enough about entertainment, let’s hear a little about the community. Starting right here at Kearns High, with the favorite teacher winning by a landslide with 18 votes is Mr. Hall, a math teacher here at Kearns who truly connects with his students. Not only that, he runs the ⅔ combo class here at school helping students to push themselves to be the best they can. He helps students find their own solutions and strategies for math and adapts his teaching to every individual student.
Moving on from teachers, let’s look at the students, with our favorite athlete. Winning by only 2 points is Jeremiah Larsen otherwise known as JJ, playing as a power forward for the
Kearns basketball JJ is a crucial part of the team and always delivers under pressure.
And last but definitely not least is our only tie. in the community events category. With six votes each, it’s The Sadie Hawkins and Homecoming here at Kearns High, two of the dances we host each having their own theme, this year the Sadie Hawkins had a day of the dead theme and some people went all out with their makeup with outfits to match. Homecoming was a story of our lives dance, with music and decor to fit.
