The World Skating championship was a thrilling event, and the competitions are ending. Every year the speed skating competition is hosted here in Kearns and every year the Olympic Oval gives free tickets to the community. The Oval also has many spots for volunteers at these competitions and would appreciate as much community help as they can get. So, keep an eye out and pop your head in when the World Cup Skating Competition comes back around.
The World Cup Skating Competition is a speed skating race which qualifies contestants for the Olympics. This event is important to the world. Though not Olympic level, it is still highly recognized.
Derrek Parra is the Kearns Olympic Oval sport program senior manager and a retired Olympian speed skater. When asked what the World Skating competition was, he said, “You have six world cups where you earn points for your country which creates quota spots for the Olympic games every four years.” The World Skating Competition has become increasingly popular.
Many countries come to the Kearns Olympic Oval for this competition and. The Oval still holds the record for the world’s fastest ice. This helps keep reputation up for Oval and community. When asked what the competition could do for the facility and community Derrek Parra said, “For the facility, it reaffirms it as the fastest place on Earth.” He also noted how, “the American team did really well this year which brings a lot of pride to our staff and our community.” Hosting the world is an amazing boost for everyone. It makes the community proud to be where they are. It also makes Kearns recognized worldwide.
Repeatedly competitions are won and repeatedly they are lost. Athletes compete for a place of recognition and communities support their local champions. When athletes compete in these competitions they stand for their entire community, state, even country, they represent you. So, get out there and support them show them your thanks.
