Many teenagers struggle with highschool like not coming to class or failing classes, teachers may assume they just have given up or they don’t care. In most cases half of it is true but some isn’t.
Here in Kearns High School many kids have failed classes but some are doing somewhat better now and they are doing credit recovery to make up for it. They feel overwhelmed about it but mostly stressed and anxious if they will graduate or not. Some people may assume that however the students grades will define them as a person but not mostly. Mareli Perez says that she sometimes doesn’t think it defines her as a person especially for her because she beats herself down about it, because teachers say she can’t handle AP classes because she’s failed it. Perez is currently doing better now she’s been having mostly A’s, B’s, and sometimes C’s and is currently on the Kearns High Cheer Team.
Teenagers are struggling with their self esteem due to school and thinking they don’t have chances to make up for their failing classes, this is due to no motivation which can cause them to, sadly, give up. Some students are even scared to show their grades to their parents because they don’t have perfect scores. Kenia Pena thinks her parent would feel disappointed in her which causes her to feel upset. I’ve asked her how this all happened with her and her relationship with school. She says that she’s always been a straight A student almost her whole childhood, but when middle school started she moved to a different location where she knew nobody which resulted in her absence at school. It soon became a habit for her to not go to class and it got worse during high school.
The class of 2026 is nearly here to come and Kenia Pena is the class of 2026 I’ve asked if her if she thinks she’ll graduate, she said that she does think she’ll graduate because thats all shes ever wanted is to make her father proud since he’s done everything for her to not struggle and to have a better life. One last thing Perez would like to say to those who have been struggling with school is that, “ If you feel you’re about to give up because it’s too much work and you’re really close to failing, at least try to not get a F and to atleast get a D-.”
