Have modern AAA games lately felt boring or off? Looking for something fast paced, action packed? Not the egregious standard of $70? Have some pent up ADHD energy you need to release? If you said yes to any of those, then consider this one for the Wishlist.
Looking at ULTRAKILL’s Steam page, it describes itself as a fast-paced ultraviolent retro first-person shooter game combining the skill-based style scoring from character action games with unadulterated carnage inspired by the best shooters of the ’90s. Rip apart your foes with varied destructive weapons and shower in their blood to regain your health. Some other things not mentioned are its graphics heavily inspired by the retro, polygonal style of the PlayStation 1 era of games, and having a really lore rich story shown in its story building, books, and boss fights. It’s also currently in Early Access and being updated regularly!
Going into the game’s roots, It was originally 100% developed by indie game designer Arsi Patala also known as Hakita online, however looking at the in-game credits, it shows a whopping 31 people have helped with the game in some way. From Tucker Wilkin credited as Senior Quality Assurance, to the PITR who is credited as the Lead Programmer for the game. With the help of their publishing company New Blood Interactive, ULTRAKILL now has sold 3.8 million copies, alongside 97.9% of the reviews on the game being positive!
For this article, The Cougar Claw interviewed a hardcore ULTRAKILL enthusiast by the name of Teo Young.
Q1: “How do you feel about ULTRAKILL’s Gameplay?
A1: “This is one of the best FPS games I’ve ever played, with satisfying parry mechanics, fun weapon combos, well-designed enemies, fast movement, and a great balance between dealing damage and healing.
Q2: “What do you think about ULTRAKILL’s music direction?”
A2: “The diverse music enhances the gameplay and immersion by a lot, making it an essential and well executed part of the game”
Q3: “Is there anything you’d like to see in ULTRAKILL’s future?”
A3: “It would be cool if the game’s repayable game mode had a random room toggle for specific rooms you’ve been to while progressing throughout the game’s levels. As well as adding a chargeable melee weapon to deal bigger damage.”
Q4: “If given the chance, what would you change about ULTRAKILL?”
A4: No answer was provided by Teo Young, it seems that Teo is already pleased with the game’s current offerings
Q5: “Does ULTRAKILL have any replay ability?”
A5: “The game’s main replay ability comes from a game mode called the Cyber-Grind, an area where you can fight enemies in waves, as well as building your own levels in the sandbox, and trying to get a better ranking on already existing levels.”
Q6: “How difficult is ULTRAKILL’s learning curve?”
A6: “The game has a relatively steep learning curve, especially for someone like myself who is used to console shooter games that don’t usually require this much movement and precise movement. With that said, while playing the game it introduces you to these things so by the time you’re at the harder bosses, you feel very qualified and skilled to complete it.”
Q7: “How memorable are ULTRAKILL’s Characters?”
A7: “ULTRAKILL’s characters are very memorable, with quotable lines, cool designs, and a somewhat unique art style that makes them stand out, along with their great story that adds to their impact on me.”
Q8: “What do you think about ULTRAKILL’s world building?”
A8: “The environments in the game are varied, ranging from simple to grand, reflecting different moods and levels of hell, while subtly revealing the story and adding depth to the world and characters.”
Q9: “Overall Rating of ULTRAKILL as a whole?”
A9: “I’ll give it a nice 7 out of 10, there’s things to improve obviously because it’s in Early Access but for what it is it’s a great standing game and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
ULTRAKILL is a gem, purchasable on Steam, developed by Hakita’s 30+ developers and published by New Blood Interactive, it’s a super fast paced game and is great for those who love the action.
