Who is the new superintendent? What are his visions for the granite district? Ben Horsley started as Granite school district’s new superintendent on July 27th, 2024. He says his vision is to ensure “Every student can learn and give them the opportunity to do so.”
Ben Horsley has been with the Granite District for over 15 years, and he has been Chief of Granites staff to Superintendent Nye for the last three years. He has worked countlessly to increase experience in education administration and for three years he was one of the top candidates nationwide for superintendent. Horsley is one of only a few people who is perfectly qualified for superintendent.
Horsley plans on giving everyone this chance by giving students, teachers, and principals all the resources they need. A student’s ability to learn all comes back to instruction and how good teachers are with students and teaching. Horsley says, “Whether you choose to take advantage of that opportunity is ultimately up to you. I cannot force you to learn and to grow and to graduate. If I’m providing all the resources, then hopefully you’ll see the benefit and take advantage and want to participate. That’s really all we can do is just give the support.”
Horsley thinks that more people should believe that every student can learn no matter the condition, “I think the number one thing is just recognizing collective efficacy, it means an intrinsic belief that every child can learn.” This goes in hand with helping provide the resources everyone needs to teach and learn. “If kids feel welcome and safe at school, that’s going to improve their outcomes.”
Ben Horsley wants to improve teacher instruction by helping people understand good teacher instruction. He believes that teaching is an art, and Horsley wants to help bring out that art and help them improve it. His goal is to help the kids, ultimately, he is here for the kids. Horsley wants to help them in any way he can, and that means also supporting the principals and teachers, building new schools. All of this comes back down to passion, “caring and recognizing that we can change the world just by helping support our kids. That’s what drives me, I think that’s that passion that drives all good leaders.”
