Over 15 years ago, Taste of Kearns was a huge event for the Kearns community, sparking the community to get together and celebrate, educate, and indulge in the entertainment that this event brought. Originally started by the principal of Kearns High School, Parley Jacobs, and the community council at the time, they came and brought this idea to try to unite us as a community.
Tom Rogers, teacher at Kearns high and frequent participant at the Taste of Kearns event, explained that Taste of Kearns was, “a big gathering to feel closer to the school, closer to the local businesses, and the local community centers; it was just a big gathering for all of those groups.” Aimee Duran, a librarian and educator that had been at Kearns before and during Taste of Kearns had this to say about Taste of Kearns,“ it was a great opportunity for the entire city to display everything we had to offer.”
Taste of Kearns was a large and joyous event for about 20 years when a change in administration occurred. When it was the new administration’s turn to run the event they came to the conclusion that change had to be made about Taste of Kearns. Looking at the resource and cost of the event made the new administration make the unfortunate decision to discontinue the Kearns tradition.
In 2025 a newly appointed student body President of Kearns High School, Xaiver Peters(12),sought to bring back Taste of Kearns. With the goal of trying to bring back the tradition, he started In 2025 to try to revive this Kearns tradition. When Peters brought it back, he tried to embody its past and went to work finding vendors, programs, and different communities to try and see if they could set up a booth. The date of this event was then set to the 24th of September, 2025 at 5:00pm near the football field and track. Advertisements started to circulate around the school and caught the attention of many people including members of the community.
Upon arriving, the size of the crowd was apparent- this was a large event. There were many booths there, from The Kearns High Latinos in Action to being sponsored by Sams Club. As the event went on, there was a crowd of performers, educators, and families alike, all coming together to educate, perform, and enjoy the entertainment.
Overall when talking Xaiver about how the general event went, he stated,“I was grateful that so many people showed up, I was busy the entire time and stressed, but I am glad the event turned out as well as it had. I liked seeing how it all came together because my work then became tangible. I am grateful it turned out so well and that event will likely be re-established in the future.”
By the end of the night, it’s estimated that 2000+ people had enjoyed Taste of Kearns, which was beyond the estimated 500-700 people that was expected. When talking to Duran, she had this to say about the work and determination that was put into bringing Taste of Kearns up and running again, “I think Xavier did an absolutely outstanding job.” Altogether, the event was a major success and is definitely an event to look out for years to come.
