Hate Crimes
October 7, 2015
There are many cases going on within the news that are involves hate crimes. They happen
everywhere, in our own backyard all the way to other countries. Hate crimes have been around
for thousands of years, “[There are] Violent crimes against individuals because of their race,
religion, ethnicity, national origin, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation… In nearly
twenty years since the 1990 enactment of the Hate Crime Statistics Act (HCSA), the number of
hate crimes reported has consistently ranged around 7,500 of more annually. That’s one every
hour of the day.” (Hate Crimes in America: The Nature and Magnitude of the Problem)
About a year or so ago Journalism has had a large target on its back. Many have heard the phrase
“Je Suis Charlie.” It translates to, “I am Charlie” a group of supporters, in Paris, used this phrase
to enlarge Freedom of speech and freedom of press after a news station was bombed and resulted
in about 12 deaths.
The most recent hate crime against journalism was just a few weeks ago, A reporter and her
camera man were killed on live TV. In Moneta Virginia 24 yearold
Alison Parker and 27 yearold
camera man Adam Ward were shot and killed on live television. Thousands watched as
Vester Lee Flanagan Murdered two people because he claimed “Alison made racist
comments.”(TV news reporter, cameraman are fatally shot during live broadcast in Virginia; suspected shooter
posts video of attack, then kills himself) Two years before the attack he was fired for going pretty much
crazy saying everyone was judging him about his race and sexual preference. This is not the first
time reporters have been murdered on live television, this is the most recent. Many people don’t
realize that journalism is just reporting, it is dangerous little words that don’t mean anything to
most people mean that the worst has happened. Bullying is also a big problem in today’s society
very little people think about how their words can really hurt people.
Sandoval, E., Silverstein, J., & McShane, L. (2015, August 27). TV news reporter, cameraman are fatally shot

It is crazy how many people do hate crimes. Maybe it’ll come to an end in later centuries.

It’s very upsetting how many hate crimes there are.
