SRI Good for Students or Teachers?

Thomas Martinez, Webmaster

Are all the students excited for the SRI?! Most students aren’t ready for the “standardized reading” test. Students are tested to evaluate their reading through this test created by the district. They try to test how you have improved by taking a test at the beginning of the school year to see how good you are then at the end of the year on the computers. They say the test is good but if you go out in the hall most kids would disagree.

Teachers agree that it is useful according to Mrs. Wilkins, Mrs. Koncar and Mr. Morris who all said “It’s a great way to see where the students are in reading.” The students disagree, out of the classes that have been asked only about 2 out 5 kids like the testing by a raise of hands when asked. Once they were asked why most don’t like it Kendra said, “The testing could use some improvements as I feel it doesn’t actually evaluate how at good I am at reading.”

Students think it does what it’s supposed to do and some are confused because they read at high levels but then get a low-test score and Mr. Morris responded to this by saying. “ That’s Probably true. “That’s a hard thing, that ones of the life lessons we learn. We feel really good about something but then a challenge comes up and how we handle it” this passage is up to the students how they feel about it, if Mr. Morris is right or not.

The students can’t really do anything about the testing even if they like it or not. Students if you could do something what would you do? Would you change it and make it more students friendly or would you leave it as it is. If left as it is it will continue to be that only about 1 or 2 students in each class actually read the suggested books.
