It’s No Debate That Debate is Great
October 29, 2015
On October 9th and 10th, the debate team had a tournament at Cyprus High school. It’s needless to say that they did a great job; but have you ever wondered what makes them so great? If so, the Cougar Claw has the inside scoop on what it takes to lead them to successful performances.
In an interview with a debate team member, Josie Butterfield, she says, “Depending on the debate you do, you practice before you go into a round. Just like…facing a wall and talking to it.” She also added, “And before tournaments, the months/weeks leading up to it, you’ll spend hours and hours practicing.” Lastly, she finished off the interview by saying, “You have to work in class, and it’s a requirement to come after school at least twice a week.”
The Cougar Claw also heard from the debate team presidents about how other students can get involved with their performances. Debate team president, Juan Rangel said, “We have open houses so that kids can come and watch.” Also, a few last words from debate’s second president, Sareena Crawford says, “It’s stressful sometimes, but our kids are working really hard.”
Between coming after school, talking to a wall, and putting endless hours of work in, it’s safe to say that the debate team works hard to get where they want to be, and to succeed in tournaments. Stop by Mrs. Hurd’s room sometime with any questions, or simply just to show appreciation for the Kearns High debate team!

It’s interesting to know that the Debate Team is involved. Hopefully more students will get involved and take KHS to competition.
