The Improvement of Pearson

Sara Bremer, writer

With the many technological advances of 2015, it’s not unusually for Kearns High School to have things such as homework online for its students. Programs online can be used for multiple subjects, but mostly is involved in the Math area. A program used is Pearson. It has a profile for each student in a class and its teacher.  Pearson has multiple tools such as a dictionary, examples of problems, calculators, and some graphs to help visualize. According to Rebecca Rabe, a math student at Kearns High, “the program includes a calculator that has options such as pi and a negative sign rather than just a subtraction sign.” Rabe states that some assignments on the Pearson also allow her to see what will be learned in. Roger Bean, a math teacher at Kearns High, says that the program does allow students to view some extra rules to an area; however, he avoids confusing students by only allowing small details to be viewed ahead of time.

With all of the features on the program, it’s expectant the program improves a student’s comprehension of the learned area. From viewing the comprehension of the subject, multiple students including Rebecca Rabe do indeed show improvement. Rebecca feels that she does better in class after having the online homework to improve her skills. In agreement, Roger Bean mentions, “students with online homework improve in class more than students without online homework.” Both individuals feel that the program is very useful, and that it offers multiple different methods to help teach a student a certain skill. In the program, Roger Bean only wishes to change little details such as font size and the simplicity of some questions. Rebecca Rabe, on the other hand, enjoys the program fully, only hoping that they make an app for devices to download.
