Does Netflix Affect Sleep and Grades?

Nolan Wellman, Writer

Netflix. A common source of movies and TV shows. It’s popular among all ages, but it seems to be growing more popular in today’s teens. Netflix affects both sleeping patterns and grades.

In an article posted February of 2014, a girl named Jessy Cooke watched a full season, twenty-two episodes, of “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” on Netflix over the course of a weekend. However, Cooke had chemistry homework for Monday morning. Hannah Berry, a freshman at Kearns, watches a lot of “Orange is the New Black” and “The Walking Dead.” She said that Netflix does affect her grades. “I only think about the show I’m watching.” Hannah says.

In another article, it states that Netflix DOES affect sleep, and not just by watching it all night. Your sleep schedule can be affected after a binge session. On top of that, research states that blue light from television and phone screens can impair the production of melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep. When asked if Netflix affects the sleep of Amberlee Mercado, she said, “Sometimes. It used to a lot, but now I’m on a strict schedule.” Netflix also affects the sleep of Hannah Berry. She says, “One more episode, then I will sleep.” But then she can’t sleep.
