Parking at Kearns High

Kearns High School has 214 parking spaces in the student parking lot, according to Ms. Loo. With these parking spaces, students are required to have a parking pass, which costs $10 dollars. If students park in the student parking lot without a parking pass, they have the chance of getting a ticket from Officer Lopez. A ticket from Officer Lopez would cost $50.

Nathan Swain, a senior from Kearns High School, thinks that even if a student is parked in a different parking area other than the student parking lot, that as long as they have a parking pass, they should not be penalized. He believes that they should focus on punishing those students who do not have a pass but still park in the student area because the parking area is so full as is. Ms. Loo, however, disagrees.

Ms. Loo thinks that even if they have a parking pass, if they are in the wrong area they should get a ticket. She spoke of how the students just need to follow the rules because “it’s for the safety of all, not just for one.”

The reasoning behind the separation of faculty and student parking is that in the past, teachers have been hit or their cars have been scratched/damaged. Ms. Loo said that many of the student drivers just don’t have as much experience as the teachers. She said that there are about a dozen accidents a school year and she believes this is due to student’s inexperience in driving.
