On July 26th, 2017 police body cameras captured a video of nurse Alex Wubbels being arrested at the University of Utah Hospital for refusing to give officer Jeff Payne a blood sample from an unconscious patient, William Gray, who had just been involved in a head on collision in Northern Utah that left the other driver dead.
According to Fox News in the body camera footage Alex Wubbels stated that “blood cannot be taken from an unconscious patient unless the patient is under arrest, if there is a warrant, or with the person’s consent.” None of these things applied to this patient.

After Wubbels said this to Payne he threatened to take her to jail if she did not give him the blood sample. He accused her of interfering with a criminal case. Payne said that he wanted the sample to see if the patient had any alcohol in their system at the time of the accident.
Wubbels then started to consult with several hospital officials and then repeated the hospital policy back to Payne, he told her that she was under arrest. He grabed her, put her arms behind her back and handcuffed her. She started shouting “You’re assaulting me! Stop! I’ve done nothing wrong.” In an interview Wubbels had with Deseret News she said that “I just feel betrayed, I feel angry. I feel a lot of things and I am still confused. I’m a health care worker. The only job I have is to keep my patients safe.” Jeff Payne has been placed on leave pending an internal investigation by Salt Lake City police and the city’s Civilian Review Board. Salt Lake County’s Unified Police Department has opened a criminal investigation at the request of Attorney Sim Gill.
Since the arrest of Alex Wubbels there is a new hospital policy that states that nurses will no longer be able to interact with police because that will be left to hospital Administrators. The new policy, which was implemented in mid-august will prevent law enforcement officials from entering the emergency room, burn until, or any other patient areas in the hospital. The new policy started to develop hours after Wubbels arrest.
