Kearns- To run a business large or small is to know suffering, to know this anguish is to breathe passion. Business is the success story of the United States, we have birthed titans and kings alike of corporate material, but the true backbone of our nation is those who dream and those with the will to see it made reality. Entrepreneurs are innovators and masochists, they take on the most impossible odds for the chance at wealth and legacy for no guarantees. When everyone wants to be a business owner what sets apart the successful and the forgotten?

“You have to be a little bit crazy. You have to push harder and faster than everyone else. With a good head on your shoulders you will be equal parts crazy, diligent and passionate.” One Stone is a company based in media with a heavy focus on hardware and advertisement. Their product is unique and with great growth potential, a digital advert catering to venues of hospitality, as well as a charger for personal electronics. The establishment it’s located in gets control of half the adverts on it making their own money on partnerships and One Stone gets the other half to make money off of their portion of the ads. Currently the product has made heads turn all over the world at different conventions and locations even being showcased on 14 episodes, six of which have aired, of the TV show “Bar Rescue”. One Stone is in bloom a critical point of the company’s life where too harsh of a winter might force it to whither, but should it survive it could be a comparably household product in bars, hotels, restaurants and as of 10/09/2019 US Air Bases as well.

David Schooley, one of the founders of the budding venture, had a few words for those with a dream of money and a wit for business. When asked what he’s had to sacrifice, he spoke of his family, his core motivation for his work, and how little time he could spend with them. He spoke of his money which had always managed to find its way into the company’s pockets as well as his time which no longer seemed to belong to him. To run any form of functioning entity you must be ready to limit your interaction with everything you hold dear in the name of your ambitions. Mr. Schooley remarked on the subject saying, “I do what I have done with my work because at its core it’s who I am, and it holds what I want to achieve. I’m good at it and it can get me what I want. I want to provide for my family, not only my current family either, I want to set a foothold to provide my family for generations to come and to maintain a legacy worth my time.” Men and Women like Mr. Schooley travel the world if not, the country not to observe it but to use it to their ends, so long as you can hold yourself to a goal and stick with it beyond everything else, your passion and creativity can be utilized and shaped into the means to complete that which you seek.

How do you run a business? Step one, is to know your character. If you are above all else able to dedicate yourself to something completely, whatever the measure, you will find success. Step two, know your goal. Ambition is the single most unique trait humans have above animals, humans have a drive to succeed and so long as you know what quantifies your success you can harness the power of humanity’s great need to progress and win. Step Three, know your means. If your idea of success is to run a restaurant with love in its food and joy in its staff, then you must first do battle with the giants and titans mentioned before. You must face these mega corporations only wanting you out of the picture for less viable competition and do better. To do better you have to start with nothing and prove that it’s enough to believe in what you cook and work harder than anyone thought capable of you. The Final step to running a business lies in advertisement. With an ability to promote yourself and your goal you have the confidence, by proxy, the charisma to achieve everything. Diversify your clientele and remember that if you do manage to rise in the ranks then the support of those with work and passion in their heart is just as invaluable as those with the money to back your plays. One Stone is only one of many newfound businesses that can be found in Utah, specifically American fork, others like “The People’s Coffee” downtown or in this writer’s humble opinion the best burger in the state “Rich’s Food and Grub” all come from humble backgrounds, each with their own business models and ambitions.
