BEYOND the loud crowd for football and basketball, a silent dynasty succeeds on the mats of Kearns High School. The Kearns High School boys wrestling team has had great success. Despite their accomplishments many students and teachers overlook their impact.

     MANY athletes feel there’s been a lack of recognition for many other sports like girls soccer and girls wrestling. Some sports that are unpopular are under looked because they aren’t talked about as much.“Many sports like basketball, football, and volleyball have all the support but take most of the recognition away,” Javier Garcia (12), also known as Tarzan said.

  WRESTLERS don’t always get the recognition they deserve, because many people aren’t familiar with the sport. Participation has dropped as fewer students participate in high school sports overall.Wrestling is one of the sports boys in high school don’t participate in.   

PEOPLE dismiss wrestling as a less masculine sport because it involves physical contact that is very close. Many athletes who try the sport change their mind after experiencing it. Those who change their opinions help challenge the stigma of wrestling.

      KEARNS has won the region title three times in a row. Many players and coaches express confidence in the team’s ability this year. Kearns wrestling has many returning starters that are ready to hit the mat. Many players believe there’s a fourth regional title coming in for these Cougars.   

     FRED Falcon, also known as Coach Falcon, a very successful coach for this powerhouse wrestling team and  has led them to many victories. Coach Falcon has been coaching wrestling for many years now. He has a great feeling these kids will have a chance to win a region title, saying ”They have many kids returning that contributed to the region title last year.”

     TO be a powerhouse team it takes hard work and many things behind the scenes to be  successful. Tarzan has been wrestling for a couple years now for the Kearns Cougars. He believes that they can win another regional title with hard work and dedication.  

     THIS team encourages themselves to keep a great connection during the season. Also they push each other to their limits to succeed–being average is not okay. “You might think it’s an individual sport and you work for yourself, but it’s a team sport,” Tarzan said. He said this shows the team that they work hard as a team and win as a team.

      THEY value much more than winning and it has led to many accomplishments. Many people don’t realize that sports are bigger than the person itself. This is the foundation this powerhouse wrestling team has implemented. 

      WRESTLING is a sport that has affected many lives and has made many impacts. Wrestling has helped multi-sport athletes with their other sports besides wrestling. It has helped linemen for football with their football and makes football easier.

      THE  sport has built a great foundation and has affected  many players’ lives. It’s a sport that teaches players discipline and hard work. According to Tarzan, “Wrestling challenged me to push through hard mental obstacles and physical demands and has shown me what true strength from believing in oneself can really be.” This shows that wrestling has a positive impact on athletes in a great aspect of life.  

     EVERY sport deserves to be recognized but this is just one of many. So many sports go unrecognized students and teachers should go check out sports all around Kearns high. “I hope the culture of our school will be more supportive of all sports, sooner or later” Tarzan said.
