WORRIED about going into Kearns High School? Well, from student to student, there is not anything to worry about. Every person who is heading into high school has gone through something similar, if not, the exact same thing, and it is a very temporary process.
THE first day of high school will probably be the most nerve-racking day for many going into high school, walking the halls, trying to figure out where classes are, and even in some classes, sitting next to people who are a lot older than oneself, and especially if students don’t have any friends or if it’s their first day in the district.
LOTS of people go through this every year. Now, it will be easier to not be nervous, just by following this very simple guide will make it a lot easier to be confident enough to head into the school with a smile.
TIP 1: Be prepared. Knowing what to do before going into Kearns High school will be difficult, to help it be easier, Angele Traore (Kearns High School Staff) suggested to “Be prepared and to not give up.” Being prepared can mean having the right materials which means a notebook, chromebook, a folder, and a pencil. Yes, those four simple things can get students through the whole year just fine.
TIP 2: Older grades. Not knowing what to do, or what the rules are will be difficult, but to help with that Jaime Heredia Gonzalez (12) thinks you should “get along with your teachers” and be able to “Get to know people older than you, it gives you more advice and more discipline.” Getting to know people who are older than oneself will definitely get that person to a higher level of understanding already. So if there is a class where there are more than just one grade, try to meet the people there that are older.
TIP 3: Don’t listen to harsh comments. When getting told what to do, especially in a rude way is tough to deal with, Nada Melville (11) thinks you can deal with this as in “don’t listen to what other people need or say, just worry about yourself,” this is important because listening to what other people think or what they tell others to do can really bring that person who is trying to follow what they want down, so instead of doing whatever someone says like “fix your outfit,” just embrace who yourself, this will help a ton in the long run and the short run.
TIP 4: Stay with past friends. If you already have friends that are close, Bryant Cedeno (9) would recommend “Stay with your old friends” this means that if known people are around, consider staying with them because they can help with support throughout the high school years. This will help significantly because for the people who are in a friend group they won’t necessarily focus on anyone else since they already have a friend group.
TIP 5: Social anxiety. One of the most common issues that multiple people from Kearns High faced was as Aiden Monsen (12) had said “Like social anxiety.” Also, this correlates with what Tina Ballard (10) mentioned “I was really nervous about making friends, cause I never made friends, and so, after one day I made friends pretty easily.” These are great examples that there are many people going into high school for the first time. So if there are nervous feelings when coming into high school, just know that everyone else coming into high school at the same time are feeling the exact same way.
TIP 6: Have a calendar. One of the most important things to have will be a calendar. A calendar will inform which days to and which days not to go to school. They can also tell if events are happening, an example of that would be if there is an assembly, or if there is picture day. So always try to focus on the calendars and try to remember the next few days so it won’t be confusing for the next few days.
TIP 7: Counselors. A very significant thing that will be significantly helpful to most for their future in Kearns High School, is getting to know their counselor, if people get to know their counselor they can easily change their schedule, talk about personal problems.
THIS can also help them because the more people someone feels comfortable around the more they feel like they fit in, so go to a counselor instead of just dealing with any problems they have internally or externally on their own.
TIP 8: Treat teachers as friends. When coming into high school just know to never be afraid to speak to teachers like they are friends, teachers will always be willing to help and listen to students’ problems, just because they are the teachers does not mean that they are also human with human feelings. This will help because one can understand that no matter what, someone will always be there for them.
TIP 9: Stay with family members. If siblings or cousins already go to Kearns High School, do not be afraid to hang around them for a bit, and ask them to go around the school and show where classes are. Also because there is someone there that is known, more friends can be made.
TIP 10: Turn in assignments. The most important thing to know is, if there hasn’t been an assignment turned in, turn it in, getting a 1 is far better than getting a 0. Now that all this information is known, all the younger people coming into Kearns High School can come not only confident in themselves but also ready to have a great high school experience for the 4 years that consists of it.
