National Novel Writing Month

Morgan Nielsen, Activities Manager

NaNoWriMo celebrates November by dedicating itself and its members to writing novels. People from all over the world come together on nanowrimo.com and inspire one another to write a novel in 30 days. Someone may ask what they have to do for National Novel Writing Month. The answer is simple: The aim of NaNoWriMo is to write a 50,000 word novel before 11:59pm on November 30th. Anyone with basic literacy skills and a desire to write may participate in this event. One may even participate in the comfort of their own home. Some talk about ‘Camp NaNoWriMo,’ but that is merely a virtual retreat where members can track their progress online. Also, members are able to communicate with and help one another. User Per_ankh says, “This is not a competition, but a cooperation.” Getting started is a fairly simple task. Sign-up requires a valid email and just a few things about oneself and their writing interests and goals. After that, it’s on to writing! Neil Gaiman, one of the previous pep talkers said, ” You write. That’s the hard bit that nobody sees. You write on the good days and you write on the lousy days. Like a shark, you have to keep moving forward or you die. Writing may or may not be your salvation; it might or might not be your destiny. But that does not matter. What matters right now are the words, one after another. Find the next word. Write it down. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.”
