What’s better than the weekend? Labor day weekend! What is Labor Day some may ask, It’s the first Monday in September in the United States and Canada. Although many people seem to notice Labor Day as an extra day to the first weekend in September, it is much more!

The very first Labor Day took place in New York City in 1882. The relieving holiday to many was established for New York City Unions whom wanted to display their industries fruit for the public. In 1887 Oregon established Labor Day on a state level, 29 states followed after, until Labor Day became a Federal holiday in 1894.

Many people in the United States are uninformed on why Labor Day is in use today, yet they still celebrate a variety of things on the date.  Mr. Martin, a Spanish teacher at Kearns High attended a mini triathlon for his kids’ entertainment. Mr. Martin also commented, “Labor Day is a nice school break after coming back to school for two weeks, where I can choose to barbeque, and spend time with my family.” Labor day is also a great way to bring your family together and experience thrilling recreational activities whether it’s in your backyard or in the backlands.

The United States Labor Day is only one of the many forms of Labor Day around the world, such as “Labour” day in Canada.  Many countries that celebrate Labour Day on the same date as Labor Day are showing allegiance to the U.K. Although over time celebrations have changed, one thing that hasn’t changed is one of the reasons why Labor Day is still around today, to give all government job employees a day of recognition and appreciation of achievements for those who dedicate their life work to the government. Labor Day was also created to give those government employees a day to relax during the spacious time period between The fourth of July and Thanksgiving.

So what is better than just a lousy old weekend you might ask? Labor Day weekend: it has significance to many because of the fun filled activities available, enjoyable time spent with family, or just a great timely weekend to sleep in!
