Nathan Harper, Staff writer

On August 12, 2016, “Pete’s Dragon” flew into theaters across the United States. And 40 years before this, the original film came to theaters. Both movies received positive reviews by audiences. But which movie was better? The movie starts out with Pete (Oaks Fegley) as a little boy with his parents. Then all of a sudden they get into a car accident and Pete winds up in the forest and his parents end up dead. Pete is all alone until a mysterious green dragon becomes his friend.

The 2016 film received great reviews. The film felt so real with the forest and the animals, especially Elliot (the dragon). It had a great story to tell and Oaks Fegley who plays Pete, plays his role very well. The film first premiered in the “El Capitan Theatre” in Los Angeles, California. Then it initially opened in theaters nationwide on August 12. The movie made $122.3 million dollars.

The original film opened on November 3, 1977 nationwide. It received $36 million in fewer than 3 weeks. The song from the film – “Candle Water” received an Academy Award nomination. The movie was a moderate success. A friend from outside of KHS, Crystal Sofonia, stated that she liked the 2016 film better that the original. She says that she would give the movie a 3/5. She states – “It was very well made, the movie felt so real to me!”

Overall, “Pete’s Dragon” ‘s movies both did really well in the box office. They were a real joy to watch. The movie is probably for ages 6+, due to some action. By doing a survey, most people liked the 2016 version better. “Pete’s Dragon” is a fun enjoyable movie for generations to come.
