School Lunch: Reputation vs. Reality

School food has had a bad reputation in the media throughout the years, but in reality it is not too bad. Even though many dislike it, some students really enjoy the food and are very thankful to have tasty and reasonably priced school food.

Well the Cougar Claw interviewed a tenth grade student from Kearns and asked if they enjoyed the food here at the school. “It’s not my favorite, but they have really good mashed potatoes and mac and cheese!” So there are students who enjoy the food. Although they like the food, they feel that the portions are never large enough and they almost never get full. “I would choose more foods with more dairy and protein in them, and more drink choices as well,” Is the thoughts they give about the menu.  When asked about prices, they responded with, “I feel that the prices on the lunches should at least be a little lower, some people can’t afford to buy them.”

The Cougar Claw got a lot of interesting answers from this student, but there was still more to the story. The cougar Claw then set out to the kitchen to ask the staff questions about our food. The Cougar Claw talked to Lina, one of the lunch ladies down there, she was questioned about where the food came from, she responded with “It comes from the Granite Central Kitchen.”

What about Prep times? “ Some prep times are about two to four hours long.” She was asked if she enjoyed the food that they made afterwards, “some of it, some of it I won’t, personally because I’m a picky eater.”
The Cougar Claw’s last question was what their most popular meal was, “Country fried steak and mashed potatoes. I think it’s everyone’s favorite.” Our lunch staff work hard to feed us properly, and everyone has their tastes. Some one different than others, but everyone should still encourage others to eat lunch, for it brings brain power so students can focus better on classes, and get better grades. But again, lunches are always provided here, so if students forgot their lunch at home, or simply didn’t  eat breakfast, give our school food a try, you might find you like it.
