Seasonal Depression at Kearns High

Michael Thomas, Staff Writer

Christmas/Winter is coming to Kearns. That means shorter days and longer nights. But the weather can affect someone’s mood and behavior. Multiple studies have been done with/about seasonal depression. The weather can also change someone’s emotion to be happier.

A study done by MHA (Mental Health America) seasonal depression is also known as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) or the “winter blues.” Seasonal depression has the same effect as regular depression, it is hard to tell whether someone is depressed or seasonally depressed. When winter comes and you lose sunlight it could drop your serotonin, serotonin is the neurotransmitter that affects person’s mood.    An anonymous 10th grader at Kearns High School states that they have seasonal depression. The student commented that. “It’s dark and gloomy. The snow makes me feel more spotted because it is all white, so I try to hide myself when I wear clothes.” She mentioned that, “when the weather gets colder I stay inside more and stop going out places, it gets very lonely and your life becomes social media.” She stated that she is a, “adoptive orphan,” and has no family for Christmas or the holidays. She says that, “The spring makes me feel a little better because of like a new life? You get to see things grow. I think that summer makes me feel more trapped in my house because I can’t go to school. I think that the winter makes me feel more calm but it changes the mood around me.”
