Christmas Before Halloween

Tyrel Gurney, Staff writer

The leaves are falling, a chill is in the air, and pumpkin spice flavored anything is everywhere. As a kid, people used to be planning their Halloween costume and candy-pillaging route. This is one of the common comments around this time of year is why they would put up Christmas décor so soon. So the Cougar Claw decided to investigate the cause for this. It’s supposed to be Happy Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the a merry little Christmas.

To seek out these answers, Kearns Cougar Claw reached out to Walmart for information. Unfortunately, Walmart turned down this reporter. So instead, going to the next best source around; Harmons. Interviewing over-the-phone with the Harmons grocery manager, Tim, asking how Harmons runs its side of the coin.

According to our manager’s insight, it’s the public’s demand for Christmas merchandise, that propels Christmas decor being sold next to Halloween. As Tim put it in perspective, “The public is making it happen.” While Harmons won’t be placing Christmas out earlier and earlier as time goes, big corporations ARE slowly getting earlier. Christmas merchandise covers everything, and there’s a big push to prepare for the big day sooner. From food, to wrapping, to stocking stuffers, to presents, Christmas shopping cuts a wide swath, whereas Halloween is more of a national party night, and Thanksgiving is a one time special family dinner. The emphasis is on food shopping for one, with costume/cosplay for the other.  We wish to express thanks to Tim, the Kearns Harmons grocery manager. We appreciated his time and answers.
The Cougar Claw interviewed an AP student here at Kearns High to discover their opinion on the subject. Our interview revealed support for this multi-holiday shopping.
